It is wonderful to give gifts, especially when they are gift wrapped in something as lovely as the contents! All my jewellery comes in either a small gift bag or with a little card and these are the products of two great projects in India.
Through family I have become involved in the work of Slum Aid. Both of these projects have been set up by my mother-in-law in India.
In Jaipur children of all ages live with their families on the local rubbish tip. Every day these children are sent out to search the tip for rubbish that can be sold. They are the sole bread winners in their family and the money they earn puts food on the table for everyone. Working with a school set up next to the rubbish tip seed money was given to a group of mothers to set up their own business. They make these lovely gift bags and the money that they earn pays for their children to attend the slum school and keeps them off the rubbish tip, as well as giving them money for the basic needs of their family.
In Mumbai a small group of women, who all have HIV, have been given seed money set themselves up in business making handcrafted cards. Quilling with paper they have made a range of little gift cards, each embellished with the words 'Best Wishes'.
